Work Day today!

February 17th, 2010 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Hello there, classes.  :)   Today, your task is to work hard and have a complete, typed draft of your memoir by the end of class.  You must have a draft completed!!!  Tomorrow (Friday), we will be peer editing your memoirs so that you can revise over the weekend and make adjustments to turn in your final draft after working in the computer lab on Monday.

I have a checklist for you today so that you remember EVERYTHING I expect you to turn in on Monday.  I will bring additional worksheets in case one of yours has gone missing.  ;)

If you have lost/misplaced/were not in class for Story Mapping last Thursday, you will need to use your time wisely because you must include it!  Story mapping can be found here. You must turn in 2 story maps with your Memoir.  For example, you could choose character mapping and setting mapping.  Or, conflict mapping and resolution mapping.  Your choice of any two.

Now, quickly before you get to work… your typed Memoir will be typed in Microsoft Word.  Let’s talk about format!  Your memoir should be 1-2 pages in length, double-spaced in 12 point font with 1 inch margins.  Your name, date, and hour should be right justified (I will explain… don’t worry!).  Your title should follow after 2 “returns” and be centered.  Then, your memoir will follow after that and be left justified (again, I will explain.)   Please LISTEN carefully so that I can explain format very quickly!!!  I want to give you all the time you need to work today.

Thank you!  -Mrs. Breen

P.S. I will be collecting “The Giver” books again during class if you have yours.  I will walk around to answer any questions after I have collected books.  Please stay in your seat and problem solve to the best of your ability.  You may ask your classmates for help.

Organizing your Memoir

February 11th, 2010 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Happy Thursday (for real this time)!  Did you notice that Mrs. Breen goofed on Wednesday and thought it was Thursday?  Oops!  Thank you, 5th hour, for correcting my mistake.  I’m surprised 1st, 3rd, and 4th missed it! Today we are in the computer lab to work on organizing and planning our memoirs.

You have 2 major tasks today.

1) Your first task is to find a picture, song, video, etc. that supports your memories about your Memoir topic. You will be able to print today, but PLEASE ask first!  Thank you!

2) Your second task is to organize the ideas for your memoir.  A few helpful tools are below!  Please take a look at both tools before you make a decision about which one to use.  You may also draw your own organizer with white paper, if you wish.  The white paper is by the printer.  Please only use ONE sheet at a time.  Thank you!

When you have completed EVERYTHING… you may have free time.  :)

Have a super mid-winter break this weekend and a Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Memory

January 27th, 2010 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Welcome back to the computer lab!  Today, we will investigate memories and their importance.  You will use the handout, “A Look at the American Memory Web Site,” to complete your classwork for the day.  The website for American Memory is here. You can also find information about This Day in History on the History Channel‘s website.

When you are finished with your handout, think about these questions and leave me a comment with your answer.

Most web sites, including American Memory, only choose one event or several events to feature.  Who or what is represented on this website? Who makes those decisions?

(P.S. You may have free time today.  I have been very impressed with your hard work the last few weeks in the lab. There are some cool games on the History Channel website. You can find them here! Check out the Ice Road Truckers Mashup or the Citizenship Quiz! Enjoy!)

About you and your first post!

T.G.I.F. students!  It’s Friday!  Woot woot!  I hope you’re looking forward to your three day weekend.  Make sure you get some extra rest for class next week.  We’ve got a lot of work to do in Language Arts class!  For today though, you have some blogging to do!  No free time again this week.  When I see products (your work done!), I’ll re-instate free time.  You understand, I’m sure.  ;)

First, remember that I asked everyone to re-do their About Me pages.  I know you can talk about yourselves more and with better grammar!  Here is what I posted last week:

ABOUT ME PAGE: If you have completed everything, including your Theme and About Me page, please go back and revise your About Me page for grammar and punctuation. If you have only written 2 sentences, write more.  Upon reading your “About Me” page, I should learn more about you and know that you have made an effort to communicate about yourself clearly.  In grading your About Me page, I will be counting quality of response (what you wrote) and grammar.  This will be due at the end of class, January 15th, 2010, and will be a 15 point paper grade.

I hope you didn’t miss that your About Me page will be graded after this class! I don’t mind if it is a work in progress.  However, it should be obvious that you are making progress!

When your About Me page is done, begin your first blog post! I will go over how to begin a new post at the beginning of class.  Your first post can be about anything you would like, within reason.  Please make sure it is school appropriate.  :-)   Remember to save!!! Save!!! Save!!!

Non-bloggers: You will do the same thing as the bloggers, only create your Word or Powerpoint presentation.  Ask questions if needed!

Have fun!!!

Back to Blogging!

January 6th, 2010 by · No Comments · 7th grade Language Arts

Happy Thursday, students!  Starting today, you will need to read MY blog for your instructions when we are in the computer lab.  I will only answer questions after you have checked my blog for information.  Because this is a “first” for you today, this post may be a little longer.  Please stick with me!!!

THE GIVER REVIEW: Before you blog today, please visit this site about “The Giver.” On the site, there are online questions.  Please do the first four sets of online questions, for Chapters 1-2, 3-5, 6-7, and 8-10.  Please do each set of questions!  You will be printing your quiz when you have completed it, but DO NOT click on “Printable Version.”  This will NOT print your quiz. Go to file and print. Ask myself or a classmate for help, if needed.  These quizzes are a good review to help you remember the story or to understand the story if you are confused.  The successful completion and printing of all four quizzes will be counted as a 25 point quiz grade.  The 25 points must be earned (in other words, you must TRY to do well on the quizzes).  This is a fabulous opportunity to “fix” your grade.  Please do not miss your opportunity.

As you complete each quiz, print it out. DO NOT FORGET TO PRINT it out.  Write your name and hour on your quiz.  Take all 4 quizzes and print them out before you hand them in to me.

When you are finished with your quizzes, you may work on your blog!

BLOGGING: At this point, your blogs should have 1) Your choice of Theme and 2) an “About Me” page with interesting information about yourself.  If you do not remember or know how to do these things, mouse over the words “theme” and “About Me” above.  Click on these words for step-by-step instructions.

NON-BLOGGERS: If you are unable to blog, you will create a Journal with an “About Me” page. You may use Word or Powerpoint for your journal.  It is your choice!  I will expect you to do the same things your classmates are doing and I will gladly help you, if you have questions.  Have fun with your journal!  Don’t forget to SAVE!!

I am sure you realize that you MUST use your time wisely in class today.  I do not expect ANYONE to have free time today in the computer lab.   In other words, I will not grant any “free time” today.  However, working hard today will earn your free time privileges back for the future.  There will be no headphones, music, YouTube, games, etc. today.

Thank you and please get to work!!!
